Mindhack | Just breathe…

Ok so we all know breathing is important right… well we can also use different techniques to enhance our wellbeing.

Our brain is linked to our body by the brain stem and our nervous system. When we’re triggered our fight/flight system is activated and signals sent through our vagus nerve to all our organs. This is our sympathetic nervous system (SNS) doing its thing – it send signals to increase heart rate and breathing, decrease blood flow to our intestines so it can concentrate on our rapid response organs. What we need to do is engage our parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) to calm and sooth what is happening. Our PNS is responsible for rest and digest mode, its when our body goes in to restorative and healing processes.

So its as easy as 1,2,3…

  1. Deep breath in and hold…
  2. Hold for 4 seconds…
  3. Slowly gently exhale…

This simple exercise floods our system with oxygen and our brain immediately flipst the switch to our PNS and in to rest and digest mode. Use it when ever you feel flustered or triggered to trin your brain it doesn’t need to react.
