So Mindfulness is hard…

Ok so unpopular opinion maybe but actually Mindfulness is the last thing I teach when working with clients. Why?

Because when you’re working with trauma the most important thing to put in place is a sense of safety… and when you start to engage with how emotions are held and stored in your body it can quickly feel like tumbling down the rabbit hole.

That and the fact that when you have low self esteem and self worth the ability to stick with a focussed discipline can rapidly set you up for failure. Even being set straight forward ‘homework’ tasks can be a struggle.

So instead we work on safety… making the brain feel safe. This is a bottom up approach of working with and healing the overstimulated brain stem fight/flight responses.

With extra resources in place to bring a sense of safety to the brain we can then begin to explore the felt sense of emotions.

Becoming mindful, present and connected is a natural byproduct of feeling safe… when we’re safe mindfulness is easy.
