What is performance and mindset coaching? And just how does that fit with Psychotherapy as an integrative practice?

Maybe you’re training hard for competition but something is off with your performance each time you compete. Perhaps your limiting beliefs are preventing you leading your best life.

Well anxiety is anxiety! Doesnt matter where or how, our system is wired up to store and remember negative experience to protect us. Failures, criticisms, humiliations, injuries and accidents… these all create psychological trauma.

Well I can most probably help! My names Niki Portus and Im a psychotherapist and performance and mindset coach. I founded Rethinking You in 2016 to help people lead their very best life. 

The impact of fear 

Whether its decision making, procrastinating,  exams, sporting and performance anxieties, fears, phobias, general emotional wellbeing or recovering from trauma… if you feel stuck then I’m here to help. 

What do I work with specifically? Fear triggers! The techniques I use quickly remove fear triggers from deep within the brain and the nervous system. When we have fear triggers a whole heap of negative emotions, such a guilt, shame, humiliation or embarrassment, and negative beliefs ie “I’m not good enough” become an integral part of our mindset. On top of that we also hold all of this deep within our nervous system and bodies, so things feel awful too. This is our somatic response and is caused because our nervous system is designed to send signals to all our organs when our fight/flight/freeze system is activated.

It can take a huge amount of work to change mindset particularly when it becomes embedded as long term procedural memory. Modern neuropsychotherapy techniques, such as Brainspotting and EMDR, are highly effective at removing fear triggers while installing new positive beliefs on a neural level.

I’m passionate about helping people to live their very best life and achieve their fullest potential. I work with clients from all walks of life and tailor treatment according to what is needed after gathering Information during an initial consultation. This could be short term to work through specific fear triggers or long term Psychotherapy for more complex traumas.

I’m an advanced level EMDR practitioner and coach, Brainspotting practitioner, clinical hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner and have developed an integrative approach to therapy which includes coaching for resilience and empowerment as well as specific outcomes from fears and phobias, anxiety, grief and bereavement, developmental and acute traumas. My coaching work includes perfomance fears related to business, sports, presentations, public speaking… you name it, if you have a fear trigger we can rapidly work with it to change your mind state.

I also have a first class honours degree specialising in Attachment theory and attachment patterns, mindsets and Mindfulness! My background in education  has provided the foundation for all my work as a therapist. I have worked with children and families for the past 18 years and retrained in coaching and Psychotherapy having witnessed for many years how anxieties gained in childhood impact on our relationships and connections with others, life decisions and self belief systems 

My practice is run from my home in order to offer such an affordable service and I also run Rethink Your Life CIC to provide donations based therapy in certain cases.
